Ronny Deila is set to be named Celtic boss today – after jetting into Glasgow last night to seal the deal. Deila’s arrival from Norway ended a frantic few hours of negotiations on either side of the North Sea as the Hoops thrashed out a £300,000 compensation package. With the bold move for the highly-rated coach all but completed, Deila’s No.2, David Nielsen, last night assured the Celtic fans they’re snapping up a boss who is heading to the very top of world football.

Parkhead chief executive Peter Lawwell had to work hard to get his man and after sorting out the personal side of Deila’s contract with his agent, Tore Pedersen, on Wednesday, he headed off to Oslo Airport yesterday to thrash out the terms of a compensation package with the Norwegian champions.

Details of the agreement have not been released and Stromsgodset chairman Tom Saxegaard said: “I can’t comment on anything now. You just wait.” However, sources in Norway told Record Sport a third offer from the Hoops was enough to secure an agreement. It is believed Stromsgodset rejected two offers as they chased £500,000 for their 38-year-old manager but the final figure is closer to £300,000. The clubs have still to dot the i’s and cross the t’s on the deal but the main aspects of the agreement are in place. And that ensured Deila could board a private jet to Glasgow last night to complete the formalities of his dream move.

Celtic hope to tie up any loose ends this morning and will then announce Deila as the successor to Neil Lennon.

The move for the relatively unknown Scandinavian coach has surprised many fans but Deila’s assistant at Stromsgodset reckons he has the potential to manage at the very top of the European game. Ex-Fortuna Dusseldorf, Copenhagen and Norwich striker Nielsen said: “Ronny is a special manager and it’s no surprise a massive club such as Celtic came in. In 2014 he is exactly the type of coach you want at your club. He has the potential to become a boss of the biggest clubs in the world – and I mean the biggest. He can become as good as any manager there is in the game. There are a lot of stereotypes in football but he is so different, so refreshing. He challenges players and develops every single one of them to become better players – and better human beings. I worked under 22 managers in my career and he has something I never saw – a genuine desire to make players better in every aspect.”

Nielsen declined to discuss the possibility of joining Deila in Glasgow.

IT’S fair to say that Celtic’s move to appoint Ronny Deila as manager was met with a mixed response from Hoopey fans. The Norwegian is already taking flak for not being a big enough name – but some Hotline callers reckon he is worth taking a chance on.

Joe Clark, Townhead, said: “I thought it was April Fool’s Day when I read that Celtic were going to appoint a Norwegian no one has heard of. He’s a cheap option, pure and simple, no matter how Peter Lawwell tries to spin it.”

Robert McEwan, Mount Vernon, said: “I hope the talk of Deila coming in is a smokescreen while Lawwell goes for his real target. But if it’s true that the Norwegian really is going to replace Neil Lennon then we need to give him a chance.”

Michael Sheerin, Liverpool, said: “Ronny who? I can’t believe Celtic are going to gamble by bringing in an unknown as boss. That’s just Celtic all over to go with the cheap option.”

John O’Donnell, Leicester, said: “If it is to be Deila then we need to give the man a chance. The Champions League is where he’ll be judged and he’ll either prove to be a diamond or a dud.”

Eamonn Hood, Kilbirnie, said: “Celtic will have a couple of strippers in charge next season if Deila and John Collins are the new dream team. The Norwegian loves to bare all and Collins is always flaunting his six-pack but they’re still a better option than Roy Keane.”

Barra Stevens, Edinburgh, said: “I keep hearing that Celtic are the biggest club in the world but if that’s the case then why are they unable to attract a big name as manager? Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea would never appoint an unknown so maybe Celtic are nowhere near as big as they think they are.”

Rangers fans weren’t happy either, with Charlie Telfer’s departure to Dundee United and Kenny Miller’s arrival both matters for debate. Liam Johnson, Glasgow, said: “Telfer isn’t Rangers daft, he’s Rangers clever because he and every other fan knows full well he would never have got his chance at Ibrox. Meanwhile, Ally McCoist is linked with St Mirren’s Darren McGregor who has had two bad knee injuries in the last couple of years. Ally’s setting the club back a decade by letting good youngsters go while going on about needing a scouting network.”

Hugh Reilly, Dundee, said: “McCoist said that there’s no better time to be a young player at Rangers but that statement sounds hollow when a kid like Telfer opts to move on.”

Robert Clark, Stafford, said: “Jim McMurran from Stevenson said in the Hotline that Kenny Miller “couldn’t even get a game in Canada”. But 43 games over two campaigns suggests otherwise. Letting young guys go for nothing is a different matter. Poor show from Coisty.”

Ronnie Knox, Tullibody, said: “Rangers spent tens of millions trying to make an impact in Europe and it was the start of our problems. We haven’t leared a thing. More players are being brought in on big wages while we act as a feeder club for the Premiership. It’s a complete shambles and McCoist must go.”

John Scott, Chesterfield, said: “I can’t get my head around my fellow Hibs fans’ anger at Leeann Dempster and her refusal to let them use the East Stand to demonstrate. She’s been here five minutes and they want her to allow them a demo inside the stadium against the man who gave her the job? What don’t they get? Thousands demonstrating in the streets outside will have a far bigger visual impact anyway.”

And finally John Bennett, Kilmacolm, said: “I’m a Scot who genuinely wants England to win the World Cup. I worked in London for years and have loads of friends who are English. I’m fed up with people who take delight in their failures. I’m going to put £200 on them to lift the trophy.”
